To ensure the proper application procedure for their Teflon coating products to perform optimally, Chemours created the Licensed Industrial Applicators (LIA) program that includes approximately 30 coaters nationwide. In order to be selected as an LIA, companies must meet a list of criteria and qualifications as well as quality of workmanship. The variety of Chemours Teflon™ industrial spray coatings is extensive, and for any particular use, there may be several Chemours Teflon™coatings that will perform well, using either a spray or dip process. Drawing on the experience of a Licensed Industrial Applicator ensures the best Chemours Teflon spray coating or dip coating for a given application, whether it be PTFE®, FEP®, PFA®, ETFE®, Chemours Teflon-S™, or others.

Outstanding Properties of Chemours Teflon™

spacer NONSTICK
Very few solid substances will permanently adhere to a Chemours Teflon™ coated finish. Although tacky materials may show some adhesion, almost all substances release easily.LOW COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION
The coefficient of friction of Chemours Teflon™ is generally in the range of 0.05 to 0.20, depending on the load, sliding speed, and particular Chemours Teflon coating used.

NONWETTING
Since surfaces coated with Chemours Teflon™ spray are both oleophobic and hydrophobic, they are not readily wetted. Cleanup is easier and more thorough — in many cases, surfaces are self-cleaning.

HEAT RESISTANCE
Chemours Teflon™ industrial coatings can operate continuously at temperatures up to 287°C/550°F and can be used for intermittent service up to 316°C/600°F with adequate ventilation.

UNIQUE ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES
Chemours Teflon™ coating spray has high dielectric strength, low dissipation factor, and very high surface resistivity. By special techniques, it can even be made electroconductive enough to be used as an anti-static coating.

CRYOGENIC STABILITY
Many Chemours Teflon™ industrial coatings withstand severe temperature extremes without loss of physical properties. Chemours Teflon coatings may be used at temperatures as low as -270°C/-454°F.

CHEMICAL RESISTANCE
Chemours Teflon™ is normally unaffected by chemical environments. The only chemicals known to affect all Chemours Teflon™ industrial coatings are molten alkali metals and highly reactive fluorinating agents.

Pre-Treatment Process

Types of Chemours Teflon™ Coatings

Chemours Teflon™ PTFE Coating

spacer Polytetrafluoroethylene nonstick coatings are two-coat or three-coat (primer/topcoat) systems. These products have the highest operating temperature of any fluoropolymer (287°C/550°F), an extremely low coefficient of friction, good abrasion resistance, and good chemical resistance. PTFE coating services are available only in water-based liquid form.

Chemours Teflon™ FEP

spacer Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene Copolymer nonstick coatings melt and flow during baking to provide nonporous films. These coatings provide excellent chemical resistance. In addition to low friction, FEP coatings have excellent nonstick properties. Maximum use temperature is 204°C/400°F. FEP is available in water-based liquid and powder forms.

Chemours Teflon™ PFA

spacer PFA (perfluoroalkoxy) nonstick coatings melt and flow during baking to provide nonporous films. PFA offers the additional benefits of higher continuous use temperature (260°C/500°F), film thicknesses up to 1,000 micrometers (40 mils), and greater toughness than PTFE coating or FEP. This combination of properties makes PFA an excellent choice for a wide variety of uses, especially those involving chemical resistance. PFA is available in both water-based liquid and powder forms.

Chemours Teflon™ ETFE

spacer ETFE is a copolymer of ethylene and tetrafluoroethylene and is also sold under the Tefzel® trademark. Although not fully fluorinated, ETFE has excellent chemical resistance and can operate continuously at 149°C/300°F. This resin is the toughest of the fluoropolymers and can be applied at film builds up to 1,000 micrometers (40 mils) to provide a highly durable finish. ETFE is available in powder form.

Chemours Teflon-S™ One Coat

spacer These solvent-based liquid coatings are formulated with special blends of fluoropolymers and other high-performance resins to improve toughness and abrasion resistance. Because the film components stratify during baking, most of the fluoropolymer properties (such as low friction and nonstick character) are retained. The resins provide adhesion and abrasion resistance. Depending on the application, these materials may require sand blasting, etching or surface oxidation to obtain the desired results. Bake requirements vary, depending on the specific coating, from 163°C/325°F to 316°C/600°F.

Chemours Teflon-S™ Dry Lubricant

spacer Dry lubricant coatings are special versions of Chemours Teflon™-S technology designed to provide lubrication under high-pressure/velocity (PV) conditions. These products are solvent-based, one-coat systems that are usually cured between 148°C/300°F and 371°C/700°F.

FAQs About Teflon Coating Spray

How is Teflon coating applied?

Best adhesion is obtained by first roughening the surface to be coated. Most Teflon coatings are applied with a spray machine that uses compressed air, much like spray paint. Sometimes a dip process is used to apply the Teflon coating. The objects are then baked until the Teflon forms a solid coat.

What is Teflon coating spray commonly used for?

Due to its nonstick, chemical resistance, corrosion protection, dielectric strength, and heat resistant capabilities, Teflon coating can be sprayed onto a wide variety of surfaces offering a permanent lubricant solution. Applications include everything from cookware, auto parts, semi-conductor equipment, and aerospace assemblies to computer components,  and nuts and bolts used in extreme environments.

How long does Teflon spray take to dry?

Most coating spray will dry to the touch very quickly in a few minutes, but in order to utilize the functional characteristics the coatings require baking temperatures depending on the specific coating, from 163°C/325°F to 400°C/750°F.

Is Teflon coating waterproof?

Yes, the spray coating is resistant to liquid and is therefore waterproof.

Is Teflon coating durable?

Due to high abrasion resistance, Teflon coatings have excellent durability and toughness.
